CHIEF WATER QUALITY INSPECTOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to manage, coordinate, and evaluate the activities of the Water Monitoring, Wastewater Monitoring, P2/Commercial, or Industrial Pollution Prevention Section of the Water Services Department or the Storm Water Management Section of the Street Transportation Department. Incumbents monitor their section's budget; coordinate section activities with other sections, departments or outside agencies; interpret existing regulations and provide comments to proposed regulations; develop public education and outreach materials; and assist with administrative hearings and related enforcement activities. In addition to supervisory responsibilities, the Chief Water Quality Inspector classification is distinguished from Senior Water Quality Inspector by the assignment of the most difficult inspection tasks involving large, complex or problem industries. Chief Water Quality Inspectors work independently under the general supervision of a Pollution Control Superintendent or Civil Engineer III.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Four years of progressively responsible experience in chemical testing, water and wastewater sampling, or industrial waste process control, including the enforcement of laws, ordinances, and regulations (or two years of experience at the level of Senior Water Quality Inspector) and completion of two years of college level course work in chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
