MWSBE Certification

The city provides certification services for minority, woman and small businesses interested in participating in the MWSBE program as a means of expanding and growing their firms.

MWBE Certification Eligibility

  • Business located in Maricopa County
  • Business must be at least 51 percent owned by an eligible minority or woman
  • Owner(s) has a personal net worth of less than $750,000 (not including primary residence and business equity)
  • Minority or woman owner has the expertise to control day-to-day critical operations of the firm and routinely exercises such control
  • Firm has been operational for at least six months or has completed four contracts/job orders
  • Owner(s) is a citizen or legal resident of the United States

SBE Certification Eligibility

  • Firm has been operational for at least six months
  • Owner(s) has a personal net worth less than $750,000 (not including primary residence and business equity)
  • Owner controls the day-to-day critical operations of the firm
  • Owner(s) is a citizen or legal resident of the United States

How to Certify Your Business

1.Complete the certification application. Please note that incomplete applications are not accepted. If you need assistance, attend one of the free certification workshops offered monthly or contact the Equal Opportunity Department at 602-262-6790.
2.Submit your application by mail or in person to the Equal Opportunity Department at 251 W. Washington St., 7th Floor, Phoenix, AZ 85003.
3A certification specialist will contact you in the event that you need to submit additional information. The certification process usually takes six to eight weeks after submitting a completed application.
4.Your certification specialist will contact you to schedule an on-site visit at your principal place of business. In certain technical or highly specialized trade areas, a work site visit also may be necessary to determine the applicant's expertise in the firm's primary field of operation.
5.You will receive a letter and/or a certificate from the Equal Opportunity Department to inform you regarding your certification status. Please review the Directory of Certified MWSBE Firms to ensure accuracy of your information.
