Tovrea Castle sits atop a cactus-covered hill like a giant tiered wedding cake. The castle, built by Alessio Carraro from 1928-1930, features a spectacular desert garden know as the Carraro Cactus Garden. The property sold shortly after construction of the castle was completed to cattle baron Edward A. Tovrea. The castle and surrounding 44 acres, now owned by the City of Phoenix, has been officially named Tovrea Castle at Carraro Heights in recognition of the families associated with its history.
The distinctive castle structure recently underwent a restoration and work continues on the site as exhibits, a parking lot, restrooms and a temporary visitor center are being designed and built. In addition, the City continues its restoration efforts of the Carraro Cactus Garden. Guided tours of the garden have been tentatively scheduled to begin in November 2009, while the opening date for castle tours has been tentatively set for late fall 2010.
The castle, a Phoenix Point of Pride, is a collaborative project of the Phoenix Historic Preservation Office and the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department. Tovrea Castle was listed on City Historic Property Registry in 1990 and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.
